How do you mount a tv to the Wall?

I know you have to buy the right size wall mount so you can fit your t.v. but my mom says that there needs to be a 2 by 4 wood in the wall so it can support the wall otherwise if you dont put that in there the wall will come down. Someone help me here and give me suggestions for some wall mounts for 40-50 inch to im gonna buy it soon.

You need to find a stud in the wall to screw it into, other than that it will just fall right out of the dry wall. You usually can knock on the wall to find a stud, unless you want to do it the best way, they sell stud finders.
