Choosing Your Baby Stroller

Are you struggling to make up your mind which  stroller to buy for your new baby, or have you a new addition to your family and are  looking to buy a double stroller?  There are strollers to suit every requirement. Singles, twin,  lightweight, jogging,  umbrella, the manufacturers have thought of numerous variations.

There are a number of factors  you should take into account when choosing. Some are safety features that you should look for with every model, others are extra features that may come with more expensive strollers.Extra features are nice, but that does not mean that cheaper  models do not offer good value for your  money. Comfort for your child or children and ease of use for you is of primary importance, decide what suits you and buy accordingly. Many parents are tempted to buy the latest model, only to find that  it is does not fit their needs.

Five point safety harness. The five point safety harness, going over the shoulder, around the waist and between the legs, is the best harness although the three point harness is also safe.

Check that the model has a safety mechanism to prevent the stroller from accidentally closing.

Balance. The stroller should have a good balance and hanging shopping on the handles is not a good idea!

Fully reclining seat. A newborn baby be able to lay flat to support his or her neck. If you are buying for a toddler  this is not so important, particularly if you are looking for a less expensive, light model.

Washable covers. Babies can be very messy! 

Wheels. Larger wheels make for a more cushioned trip, particularly if there are shock absorbers, but of course this can result in a heavier stroller. Some tires are now air-filled.

A large size basket is always desirable unless you only want a fast, light stroller.

Most parents  will probably buy two strollers as their children grow up. Young babies need the kind of comfort and protection from the elements that was found in the big prams once manoeuved around  the park by nannies.  Many modern strollers offer that degree of comfort, but they are often bulkier models and as children grow they are harder to push. A three or four year old will be walking a lot of the time, but there are still occasions when they need a ride. Less expensive, light, umbrella strollers are the ideal solution to this age range. Some manufacturers are producing more and more lightweight models, even twin, that can be used from birth through to 4 years and still be easy to manoeuvre, so it is worth shopping around.

Finally you should be very careful if you decide to buy a used model. Choose a well known brand and as well as making sure that it is safe, ensure that the model has not been recalled. You can do this at www.cpsc.gov.

Is a baby harness a good idea?

We are taking a trip to Sea World San Antonio in June and I have been thinking about buying a baby harness for my son, who will be 20 months by then. He is such a curious boy now, and I am sure he still will be then, that I am worried about him running off. I don’t want to confine him to the stroller since there will be so much to see.
Does anyone else use a baby harness? Or do you have recommendations for a brand? Also, what has your experience been in using it (from the baby, and from other people)?

KEEVELISH-I totally understand the part about holding his hand, which is what I do when we are out at the store, or less crowded place. But with the amount of people who will be there and the amount of hours we will be out made me wonder.
I also was thinking about his safety as far as people being able to just scoop him up if I rely on him holding my hand.

My son is 21 months old and i also have a 3 week old… And my mom “grandma” bought My son Julian a harness from target and I honestly love it! He is a very curious and high energy boy like most… i use it mostly now when the babies have doctor.He can’t run in the street, get lost,and being KIDNAPPED i can keep track of him at all times. I yell less and he thinks he is being alot more independant and a big boy… He is not confined to a stroller. And he likes it… Its just like a backpack and its even a monkey and he thinks it’s curious george… Although some people look at me differently when he is wearing it and some people even say things i just always say better safe then sorry… Then some other people say that that is a good idea… Its very safe and i highly recommend it!!! If you decide to get it let me know what u think!!!
